The way you cut them drastically changes how much flavor they release into the broth. Coffee is no different! The grind size directly affects the extraction process – how much flavor and aroma is pulled from the coffee grounds by hot water.

  • Under-extracted coffee (usually from too coarse a grind) tastes weak, bland, sour, or especially watery. The water flows too quickly through the grounds, not picking up enough of those delightful coffee compounds. Think of it as a rushed conversation where you only get half the story.

2. Medium-Coarse Grind

 

This one is a bit tricky but it looks like this: A little finer than coarse, like rough sand. Best for: Chemex, drip coffee makers with a flat-bottom filter. Why: Offers a good balance for methods where water has moderate contact with the grounds.

 

3. Medium Grind

 

Looks like: Similar to regular sand. This is often the "standard" for pre-ground coffee. Best for: Drip coffee makers (cone filters), AeroPress (with longer brew times), siphon brewers. Why: A versatile grind that works well for many popular home brewing or traveling, outdoor methods.

 

4. Medium-Fine Grind

6. Extra-Fine/Turkish Grind

 

Looks like: Extremely powdery, like flour. This may not be one of your brewing methods but let me just put it here because it may be for you. This grind is best for: Turkish coffee. Why: Designed for boiling with water, where the powder dissolves, leaving a rich, thick brew.

However, remember that coffee starts losing its flavor and aroma immediately after grinding due to oxidation.

    • How to Minimize Freshness Loss: Grind just before you leave, store in an airtight container or vacuum-sealed bag, and keep it in a cool, dark place. Use it as quickly as possible!
